Working With Colour

St Kilda East

PROJECT OUTLINE
Our client’s grand old home Cranford was built in the late 1800’s and boasts the most fabulous sized rooms, the main bathroom was no exception. The existing bathroom was tiled in marble with a small shower recess and an overly large corner spa bath which dominated the bathroom. The challenge was to create a bathroom that was welcoming but not cavernous and used colour that was bold enough to work with the rest of the home.

CLIENT BRIEF
The existing bathroom’s scale was very poor.

Our client’s brief was to design a bathroom which addressed the scale of the room. The bathroom was to contain a freestanding bath, a generous sized double basin vanity and wall cabinetry for additional storage and a shower that was bigger than the existing shower recess. With 4m high ceilings having another bathroom using tiles only did not excite either of our clients, Beatrice suggested using timber panelling in the bathroom to reduce the amount of wall tiles.

DESIGN STATEMENT
Due to the scale of the bathroom, we set about dividing the room into zones that would enable our clients wish list to be realised. A large double floor mounted vanity and wall mounted bevelled edged mirrored cabinets provide a generous amount of storage. Installing wall sconces between the mirrored cabinets give the option of using softer lighting when soaking in the bath.

The space beside the vanity was a perfect size for a level entry shower recess. Due to the walls being brick we were unable to install a niche inside the wall.  The solution to keeping the shampoo bottles off the floor was to construct a nib wall at a comfortable height for our clients.

Our client’s choice of free-standing bath works well in this room, the scale is perfect for the area it nestles into.

The use of white timber wall panelling, deep blue paint, patterned floor tiles and only white subway tiles on the walls inside the shower recess, not only provides interest in this bathroom but creates a space you wanted to soak in after a big day.
