Main Bathroom & Ensuite

Glenferrie

A beautifully appointed Victorian home exudes quality from the minute you open the front door. Each room is carefully considered and well appointed. It is clear the owners are passionate about the overall feel of their home.

MAIN BATHROOM
Client Brief
Client’s brief was to create a main bathroom that doubles as a guest bathroom. The bathroom must be in keeping with the home as it was visible from the main hallway. A large walk-in shower recess with a niche to keep shampoo bottles off the floor was required. A freestanding bath large enough for an adult to relax in at the end of a busy day as well as being suitable for children to use was a must. The vanity and mirrored cabinet needed to have plenty of storage. A new lighting plan was required addressing both task and mood lighting.

Design Statement
The existing lounge was to be converted into a large main bathroom. As the east wall was only a single skin of bricks a nib wall was constructed along the entire wall to enable a wall mounted vanity to be installed. A mirrored cabinet the exact depth of the nib wall gives a clean flush finish. The sleek clean lines of the vanity with a slim Corian vanity top, compliments the overall quiet simplicity the designer is trying to achieve.
Positioning the beautifully formed freestanding bath under the window & sky light creates a focal point. Enhancing the bathing area with wall sconces creates mood lighting.
The walk-in shower recess size was designed to create balance to the room not to be a feature but to service the needs of the family.
Layering of finishes and textures and tones has produced a spa like feel to this room.

Structural Challenges
Prior to the renovation commencing, the existing sky light was positioned over to the right-hand side of the room.
Installing a new skylight was an expense the team wished to avoid. However, rebuilding the light shaft and installing a solar light produced a light well that appeared to be centred to the bath, shining light down onto the freestanding bath.
The original rooms floor joists sat higher than the adjoining hall flooring. As we were changing the lounge into the main bathroom client requested the hall floor and new bathroom floor be flush.
Like many Heritage homes we have renovated there were several areas that needed to be thought through and solutions found. Simply Bathroom Solutions attracts these old dames who need that little extra care throughout the renovation journey.

Client brief
Client requested the built-in bath be removed to increase the bathrooms footprint. The new bathroom was to receive a luxury finish with clean lines, a good amount of vanity and eye level storage. A large walk-in shower recess with a bench seat. Lighting was poor in the existing ensuite, a new lighting plan required both good task and mood lighting.

Structural Challenges
Renovating Victorian homes regularly presents unexpected challenges, and this grand old dame did not disappoint. As the ensuite used to be the original homes rear porch it sat substantially higher than the master bedroom floor. To create a seamless transition between the two rooms the floor joists were removed, and new floor joists installed. Additional structural timbers were required to support the upstairs extension and to enable the original powder room wall to be removed.

Design Statement
A quote from the designer Mies van der Rohe “the devil is in the detail could not be truer than in this ensuite. Plastering the doorway where the bedroom transitions into the ensuite shows the depth of the bathroom wall giving a quiet elegance to the entry.
Dropping the entire bathroom ceiling height and increasing the height of the bathroom door resulted a seamless transition between two surfaces. The ceiling was height was based on the exact tile height ensuring the vertical wall tiles were full height with no cut tiles at the base of the bathroom walls.
Creating a simple sightline where the base of the seat aligns with the bottom of the vanity allows for a harmonious visual aspect. This a bathroom where there a many small details that result in a compelling, visual, and inviting space. The result is of a client, designer and builder working closely to create a beautiful room.
